General Knowhow

The current scenario in India is predominantly described by two major exams, although there are individual exams conducted by different banks for various other posts. Certain basic concepts are:

  • The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) common written exams (CWE) is the primary gateway of exams to enter a major array of public sector banks.
  • The only bank which is not encompassed by the IBPS exam is the State Bank of India and its subsidiary banks.
  • IBPS conducts specific exams for particular posts like Clerk, Probationary Officer (PO), Specialist Officer (SO) and Regional Rural Banks (RRB).
  • Statistically, applications for the post of PO and Clerk are the highest.

Clerical Post & the Exam

The exams for the post of clerk consists of various sections namely – Reasoning, English Language, Numerical Ability, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge. The distribution of marks vary in accordance with the bank norms for tests. Notably, there is a negative marking of 0.25 for every wrong answer. Due the advancements in technology, most exams have resorted to online medium of conducting the tests.

Preparation & Planning

Now that the fundamentals are precisely clear, let us take a glance at the preparation strategies to crack an exam for the post of clerk in a public sector bank. A few steps/methodologies are described below:

o   Early Planning – Clerical exams are conducted twice a year and hence the time gap between the exams must be utilized to the full extent. Right from dates and schedules to markings and evaluation process, the candidate must emphasize on each and every aspect of significance. One must memorize or get accustomed with the announced syllabus. Candidates must keep themselves informed via all the modern platforms like internet and phone, instead of relying on newspaper announcements only. An early acknowledgement of pointers can ease the process of last moment preparations.

o   Personal Effort – Personal strategies are very important for fruitful scoring. The competition is unforgiving and there is no room for error. It is important to study the past papers for getting an idea of the framework of the possible upcoming question paper. Candidates must improvise on their calculating techniques and other shortcuts based on previous patterns. Time is a limiting factor and a wrong answer can accumulate negative marking, therefore the brainwork must function in a way that combines intelligence with tricks efficiently.

o   Practice – Score plays a critical role in the outcome, rather than the qualifying part. Rigorous practice can definitely yield better results. One can spend more time and engage in self-study or join professional coaching classes for understanding the overall exercise in a better way. Solved question papers, guidebooks etc. are available in all regular book stores. Studying and practicing them simultaneously can fetch satisfactory marks.

o   Interview & Group Discussion Practice – Many a times, a candidate faces rejection at the interview stage due to nonperformance. This is plainly lack of practice. One has to come prepared for all sorts of verbal questioning in an interview. Newspapers, news channels, interview videos etc. are very good resources for the same.

Above all, the candidate must have the zeal to achieve success.
